AN IRISH SCRAPBOOK

In 2006, Robert and I traveled through County Antrim and down to Sligo for a few weeks, doing some genealogy research and generally enjoying the fabulous scenery, and culture.

Here are a few photos of that trip.

Ballimtoy Harbor on the North Antrim Coast,
Rathlin Island in the background

A little shop along the quay at Ballintoy where two crazy grandmothers sold sandwiches and cream teas.
The sweets were all home made.

Contented cows on a fine soft day.

The sheep auction, very serious, very exciting. All men and boys, intent
on this important annual event that is a test of husbandry and bargaining skill.
I was the only woman in the place.

Dun Luce Castle, a fabulous romantic ruin, at the cliff's edge.
The kitchen has already fallen into the sea.

The Metal Man, a channel marker in Sligo Harbor. Placed in this spot in the 1820s, it is a cast iron figure of an ordinary seaman of the British Navy and has been written and painted and sung about by Sligomen for generations. His right arm is pointing to the safe side of the channel for incoming traffic. That is Knocknarea in the background with the cairn of Queen Maeve the bump on the top. The grave has never been explored. These are ancient lands.

What remains of and old farmhouse in Powellsborough, in the Parish of Achonry, County Sligo.
I believe it was my great grandmother, Alice Mulholland's, home. It is certainly a Mulholland property.
